2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk3 – Rams 10, Broncos 6

The Rams/Sean McVay is changing the NFL in many ways – this year it’s with his lack of concern for the preseason. McVay holding out his veteran/starting/key players is allowing more NFL head coaches who like to brag about what tough guys they are and what tough guys they want on their team and what a tough team they have…they all worried for years that the preseason was putting assets at risk unnecessarily, but NFL head coaches were too afraid to make a bold move of disregarding preseason games…no one wanted to be the one to step in and blaze the trail and treat the preseason as just a glorified rookie scrimmage (which is useful in it’s own right). Once McVay did it, and never played key starters, and his team raced to the top of the league in short order…now some of the fake tough guy head coaches are following suit. It’s just the smart thing to business-wise. You’re telling me one or two series in Week 3 of the preseason somehow gets the team in rhythm for their first regular season game in like two weeks from then?

Just because you adopt the same preseason attitude as McVay, doesn’t mean your coaching ability is anything like McVay. Matt Patricia sticks a pencil behind his ear to be like Belichick…but it doesn’t make him Belichick.

The Rams played backups and Denver countered with the same here. As far as scouting this game for fantasy goes…sorry, both teams checked out and played backups and the backup’ backups. I only have four notes I want to share from this game…

Fantasy Player Notes…

-- Another Darrell Henderson (11-28-0, 1-4-0/2) goes nowhere event. It’s hurting his perception and ADP in redraft and dynasty rookie drafts.

I want to see him pop one too, but he’s literally getting hit the moment he touches the ball from the QB half of the time this preseason. There is no blocking for him. When he has some space, he looks fine but he’s mostly been victim of the Rams dismissing the preseason.

Henderson is going to touch the ball like 5-7 times in Week 1, and probably one of those will be a little screen or swing and if the 1st-team blocking is there he’s going to blast off and change his perception back. I cannot downgrade him for his preseason work.

…and, furthermore, he’s facing Denver here – which their 2nd-team defense might be a top 15 NFL defense. Denver’s defense in the preseason has allowed a field goal/just 3 points in the first-half of their last three preseason games…including when their 1st-group took on Jimmy Garoppolo/SF’s 1st-team – and they made the 49ers look stupid and made Jimmy G. the fodder of ‘is he overrated’ in football talk circles all week.

-- Broncos rookie LB Justin Hollins (8 tackles, 1 TFL) led the team in tackles this game…but it wasn’t at ILB. This game he worked almost all of it at DE/OLB and looked very good there too. Hollins’ IDP stock/future keeps rising. So versatile and gives this burgeoning Denver D a rotation weapon and depth.

-- 4th-year, former 6th-round draft pick, Rams WR Mike Thomas (3-76-0/3) looks reborn in 2019. He was a sleeper prospect back in the day and quickly flamed out and was forgotten. He’s back with a vengeance this season. He might make the team as a #5 WR. If he’s cut…he’ll be grabbed by some team, I suspect.

-- A Jake Butt (2-17-0/2) sighting! Memba him? He was back here and had a few catches. Just looks slow and is no threat on the TE depth chart. 50-50 he gets released next week.

 -- Just a note for this week…

The next Video Q&A is planned for Thursday night 8/29. Time not set yet, but I believe it will be start time somewhere around/between 9-10pmET for an hour or so (which usually means I can’t stop talking for 2 hours).

Subscribers…all the shows are out there to rewatch at your leisure. See the access detail posts for more info. They are going to be housed in a better, more organized place soon but they’re chronologically available right now.
