2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk3 – Redskins 19, Falcons 7

The Falcons fall to a robust (0-4) in the preseason…I see nothing but meandering and uninspired play (it’s just the preseason though) and I barely have any notes on their players because they really don’t have any interesting young players for fantasy. The Falcons are the worst team for ‘interesting’ that I’ve covered this preseason.

I did this game re-watch/study quicker than normal (for a Falcons preseason game), so I could see Derrius Guide in action. Let’s start there!

Fantasy Player Notes…

*Reminder: Special Video Q&A and Watch Party at 12:30pmET today rolling into the Arizona game at 1pmET.

-- I wasn’t a huge fan of Derrius Guice (11-44-0, 1-4-0/1) the talent coming out of LSU, and like a lot of scouts I was even more turned off by him in interviews and in a background check. This is trouble waiting to happen…and it’s been unfruitful for Washington after one year. After multiple surgeries, we got to see Guice return/debut in 2019…

Still not a fan. Turned off once again. Looks stiff (‘tight hips’ we say in the biz ;) and just no real punch or magic when he has the ball. If he was Derrius Smith, UDFA RB from 2018…he’d be cut before the 53-man rosters were locked. But Washington has emotion tied here…and in their fear of a total embarrassment drafting him they’ll keep him around just to see what might happen/make sure he doesn’t star elsewhere and double the embarrassment.

He’s just back from a year off so I’m not closing the book on him, I’m just saying if I had to write the book now…it wouldn’t be good.

-- Jordan Reed (1-10-0/2) suffered a concussion and that’s scary because he has had multiple concussion issues over the year and ‘the next one’ (or this one) might be his last…might force him to retire. He’s had one issue after another.

He makes $9.6M if he stays an NFL player…or gets $3M+ if he’s cut. I’d bet if Washington releases him, he’ll retire. He’s been through too much and made good money off his last contract to come back for some $1M grunt contract and put his head at risk anymore.

Jeremy Sprinkle (1-28-0/1) would be the sleeper uprising, to a degree, if Reed is done. Working with Keenum/Haskins won’t take a TE very far for fantasy.

-- I was isolating on several Redskins 1st-round pick pass rusher Montez Sweat (2 tackles, 1 QB hit) plays and at first, to me, he looked kinda clunky, not fluid. Not very good. Doesn’t even look good in his uniform. He’s a physical specimen but you couldn’t tell it from him in a Redskins jersey right now.

I was starting to think maybe Sweat wasn’t that good or something was wrong, and then I saw Matt Ryan try to escape to his right scrambling forward from a pass rush while Sweat was rushing from his left and was totally blocked away from the action. However, once Ryan tried to run right and the play extended, Sweat came from his left side like a cheetah and pounced on the escaping (slow) Ryan. Soon after, Sweat just blasted past his blocker and was in on Ryan quickly forcing a throw and popping Ryan on release for good measure. So, I felt a little better about things on Sweat as the game wore on.

-- Redskins UDFA WR Steven Sims (0-0-0/3) looks really good/quick out on the field. He had two TDs lost in this game. One a defender made a nice last second tip of the ball in the end zone away from Sims. Another Sims was open easily in the end zone, but Dwayne Haskins threw the ball to a few feet too far in front and they missed the score.

I’m thinking Sims won’t make the team, but if any NFL team was paying attention…they’d grab him when Washington tries to put him on the practice squad.

Dwayne Haskins (7-13 for 74 yards, 0 TD/0 INT) looks the same as he has all preseason…awkward throwing the ball. One kinda good throw for every 4-5-6 throws.

-- I have all of one note on the Falcons side of things…

PK Giorgio Tavecchio (0/1 FGs) has missed three FGs the past two games. Two 50+ yarders in Week 2, and a 30+ yard chippie here. There is some unrest happening at kicker in Atlanta all the sudden. Could Matt Bryant be coming back?
