2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk4 – Chargers 27, 49ers 24
A parade of backups and future going-to-be-cut players in this game. It was sloppy but definitely a few things to discuss.
Fantasy Player Notes…
-- As I’m wrapping this up, I saw the news that Matt Breida is being listed as the #1 RB over Tevin Coleman on the depth chart.
All I can say is… More proof of the lower valuation of the RBs in fantasy. What other positions are there where shock starters are being named a week ahead of the season? The Browns are not like ‘surprise’ Damion Ratley is our new #1 WR for 2019! But at RB, things are changing all the time. What’s true today is not tomorrow. You wonder why I’m down on James Conner…the team loves him so all preseason…Jaylen Samuels barely got a turn, etc. It changes in an instant at RB. By Week 4, Conner could be old news – I’m trying to predict that ahead.
Breida, McCoy, Hyde, Singletary ‘stock up’ suddenly…Tevin, Damien, Duke ‘down’…just like that. Next Tuesday…we’ll have 2-3-4 more changes we didn’t see coming or were hard to imagine happening so quickly. Sony Michel is the future, and then Damien Harris will start Week 3 and freak everyone the hell out (that’s an example, not a prediction…per se).
You fret about your RBs…I don’t. Gimme one steady RB1 to start the season and I’ll figure out RB2 as I go, and eventually I maneuver into an RB2 who has RB1 production; probably will find several of them to use/dispose of.
I’m sure Breida will start but it will be a split with Tevin…and it will be hot-hand-ish, and I really don’t want to go there if I don’t have to.
-- Jatavis Brown (4 tackles), the Chargers best linebacker, started this game. Why? Because for Anthony Lynn believes he’s a 3rd-stringer…so says the current depth chart. Thanks for saving our defense last year, Jatavis. Enjoy the 3rd-string now.
Jatavis is a free agent at the end of the year, and that cannot come fast enough.
In this game, Brown had his leg bent back so awkwardly it looked like his season was over. After laying on the field for a while, tended to by trainers, and with several slow-mo replays showing an obvious/major ankle or ACL moment (his foot was almost doing a 180 as he was falling down on his stuck cleat)…Jatavis then popped up and walked off the field with no help.
I have no idea how he did it.
He can think about how lucky he was while he is on the bench all year. Wait until 2020! Or when Denzel Perryman gets hurt by Week 2.
-- Chargers UDFA rookie RB Jeremy Cox (5-40-0, 3-27-0/3) put in another nice showing, but he was the 3rd RB getting touches here. He was behind guys I didn’t know were still on LAC or in the NFL.
Size, power, good feet, very nice hands…and Cox was cut and he’s not signed anywhere yet. How no one claimed him is beyond belief…AND completely normal for the NFL. In other news, Jordan Scarlett made an NFL roster.
-- LAC rookie Nasir Adderley (2 tackles, 3 PDs) made his preseason debut here but it wasn’t anything special. He looks like a cornerback playing safety. Looks like he’ll struggle making tackles (low body mass) but he gets to the ball in coverage well.
-- Rounding out the LAC notes…
Rookie QB Easton Stick (3-6 for 22 yards, 0 TD/2 INT) got progressively worse as the offseason went on. Showed some promise as a passer early and then started throwing a bunch of picks. His first two passes here midway into a Week 4 preseason game were both bad picks. He DID make the team though…so now the future is fine if Philip Rivers fades off.
-- 49ers RB Jeff Wilson (20-100-1) ran for a hundred yards here, but not good enough to make the team. He was cut but then picked back up for the P-Squad.
-- I thought 49ers rookie OLB Dre Greenlaw (3 tackles, 1 sack) really played well here and was going to start Week 1, but he was playing here and listed as a backup on the first 53-man depth chart I saw…but now he is listed as a starter with the latest release. He and Breida ascended to starters, it appears.
