2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk4 – Rams 22, Texans 10
This was a tough watch. The Rams don’t participate in the preseason, so Week 4 was even more dreadful. The Texans decided to take the rest of the preseason off last week when Lamar Miller and Zach Fulton got hurt on back-to-back plays on the 1st-series. This was a coaches/planned as a big ‘who cares’ game of preseason Week 4, except we need to discuss the Houston RB situation.
Fantasy Player Notes…
-- The Texans DID play rookie RBs Karan Higdon (8-25-0, 2-16-0/2) and Damarea Crockett (7-14-0, 1-4-0/1), so we know neither are in the Texans’ plans for Week 1. If either were seriously being considered/needed to work with Duke Johnson, you would have seen one or the other sitting. Another mild hope for the Buddy Howell Week 1 lead role!!
The two rookie RBs were playing for the practice squad most likely. The Texans are falling apart, physically, and personnel-wise…it’s all getting away from them. Not GM, Clowney wants out, O-Line dying…and Bill O’Brien needs a running back ASAP! He cannot go into the season with a Johnson-Howell duo.
The fact that Zach Zenner hasn’t signed in Houston strikes me as a sign the Texans don’t care or know about him. The Texans should’ve pounced already. It may mean Zenner is done with football…or he’s going to wait by the phone for the next ACL tear in the league coming somewhere. Because more teams are having guys sit out the preseason, the amount of critical injuries in the preseason are down…so the opportunities that would be happening from these preseason mishaps won’t happen until in-season. Zenner can just wait, perhaps. Either way…he’s not in Houston, so I assume he’s not going there.
Houston likely makes a deal by noon or so tomorrow or waits until 4pmET on 9/1 to see what RBs got cut loose. The Texans don’t have a great priority to claim guys, so trade has to be the way they are going…they’re forced into it. My top five on the leaderboard right now for Houston…
1) Rex Burkhead
2) C.J. Prosise
3) LeSean McCoy
4) Gio Bernard
5) Kenyan Drake
As far as Higdon v. Crockett… Higdon started in this ‘battle’, so if one of them makes the 53-man it probably would be Higdon. Crockett going to get the UDFA treatment.
-- Speaking of Houston trades…
Jadeveon Clowney will be traded, but not to Miami…unless Miami is willing to give Clowney a ton of money (and they might). A trade will likely be to a contender – Seattle, Philly, Dallas. I think Seattle might get the win here…and Prosise part of the deal.
Clowney wants to get a long-term deal…he doesn’t fully care about where that is at but he wants it to be with a contender. Firing his agent had something to do with Clowney not wanting to be in Miami, I’ve been told.
However, the problem for Clowney is -- no one wants to pay him long-term because of his reputation as ‘unpassionate about his craft’…something shoving him a bunch of money a la Mario Williams, will not cure. Clowney will probably settle for signing his tender to get paid this one year and to get out of Houston. He’s done in Houston, make no mistake about that.
-- Tight end talk on TEs you could care less about…
Texans TE Jerell Adams (5-36-1/6) had a great camp and nice preseason. I liked his work back when he was with NYG. Not a star, just could be useful as a 2nd TE and occasional weapon in a passing game. Adams could be part of a deal to Miami with Clowney with Kenyan Drake as part of the deal. Adams is likely going to get cut pre-53-man rosters and be claimed by a team in TE need. He might have an ounce of trade value.
Rams rookie UDFA TE Kendall Blanton (2-22-1/3) had a solid showing here. It looks like Blanton has changed his body for the better. A bit leaner and quicker. There is a pulse with him now, maybe. He’ll be cut but see if they put him on the P-Squad.
-- The one guy I think the Texans might cut that, if I were an NFL GM, I’d be looking to pounce on is North Alabama rookie UDFA DB Chris Johnson (3 tackles). He’s got NFL starter potential as a safety and the speed-agility profile/tape of a possible convert to CB (which is what I’d try with him).
