2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk4 – Ravens 20, Redskins 7

John Harbaugh is one of the last coaches who takes the preseason seriously. He went 4-0 this preseason. He is 17-0 the past four preseasons…yep, 17-0...not a typo.

The last two opening games of the regular season the Ravens won by a combined score of 67-3. Another win here…even a lot of Dwayne Haskins thrown at the Ravens’ backups/future cut-ees couldn’t stop Harbaugh from another preseason win.

Fantasy Player Notes…

-- Redskins UDFA rookie WR Steven Sims (1-7-1/2) is on the table as one of my better scouting calls of the 2019 pre-Draft season. He’s the very first WR that I profiled in depth for the 2019 NFL Draft. I thought I saw some Tyreek Hill/Taylor Gabriel in his game tape I scouted on him from 2018.

Sims did not get invited to the Senior Bowl or the NFL Combine. He had a very poor (in measurables) Pro Day, and just kinda fell off the draft map. He went undrafted but was so good this summer for Washington that he made the team…which is always shocking when a UDFA WR forces his way onto the roster…even if it is the Redskins.

I have never seen Sims’s weak Pro Day numbers play out on tape…when I initially saw his Pro Day speed-agility times, I wondered if the timing equipment malfunctioned. On tape, in college or this preseason – I thought Sims looked fantastic. Incredibly quick with a high-end burst. I must not be crazy with what I saw, because the ignored UDFA is now the rookie starting kick returner for Washington in Week 1.

He has blazing speed, but also great hands – his TD catch in this game was on a ball thrown at his ankles where he was running to the sidelines at 100mph. He reached down and dove for the impressive worm burner/TD grab.

He will be a fantasy viable WR someday, and I will bask in my own glory about it. I would have figured 2020-2021…but it may be sometime in 2019.

-- Two solid NFL RBs were cut after this game…

Redskins RB Samaje Perine (5-13-0, 0-0-0/1) was dropped but grabbed by the Bengals, which means he will be somewhere else by year’s end/has no chance to make any impact there.

De’Lance Turner (18-62-1) was the guy Harbaugh went to last year before Gus Edwards, when Alex Collins flopped. But then Turner got hurt after a few weeks on the main roster and Edwards was elevated, and history was re-written. Turner has something to offer an NFL team in need of a competent power runner with decent hands…but he cleared waivers and is back with the Baltimore P-Squad. Any team could come get him…I bet they will be Week 4 this season.

-- Wow, I almost forgot about Jaleel Scott (6-87-1/10) existing, but he was straight fire in this game. 6’5”/220…a star receiver for New Mexico State, a 4th-round pick for Baltimore last year.

We keep focusing on Miles Boykin, but Jaleel Scott is probably the ‘big’ WR to watch for the Ravens…a more talented receiver. He’s got Seth Roberts (starter?) listed on the depth chart in front of him and Boykin behind him.

-- Redskins UDFA TE, 6’8” power forward-looking Donald Parham (1-28-0/2) looks like a freak prospect on the field – so tall, decent hands, such reach. However, he was signed by Detroit after the draft and cut soon after, then ended up with Washington for a look and got dropped but was not invited back to the P-Squad.

Must be some ‘issues’ off the field for everyone to look and pass him by when they get a deeper look.
