2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk4 – Seahawks 17, Raiders 15
Another throwaway Week 4 preseason game. Most of the guys playing were cut this past weekend. The biggest news from these two teams was off the field — Seattle’s big trade with Houston. We’ll hit that and other tidbits.
Fantasy Player Notes...
— The Jadeveon Clowney deal to Seattle was a good one. Actually, it was a great one. Not that I’m some Clowney fan, I think he’s radically overrated, but the deal structure was basically Houston giving him to them for free.
Bill O’Brien hated Clowney and his injuries and attitude. He would have cut him if there were no backlash from the fans to deal with, but he also had some trade value (and a big issue being ‘the cost’).
Seattle gives up two OK/useful OLBs and a 3rd-round pick for Clowney, who is on a one year deal.
Seattle gets Clowney in his ‘needs to flash’ year for hopes of a big deal in 2020. If he signs anywhere but Seattle in 2020, the Seahawks would get a 3rd-round compensatory pick. So, it’s two no-name OLBs for Clowney essentially. Like I said — the Texans gave him away and cleared cap space.
Seattle is a big winner for 2019 here. They’re the long-term loser if they sign Clowney to a mega deal…because this is Mario Williams 2.0.
Clowney makes the Seattle DST better but their schedule is too terrible to even consider for the long haul in 2019.
— Speaking of deals... Oakland was terrible last year, which gives them a high priority claiming the recently released. Their roster is still pretty terrible. This weekend would have been a great time to grab a lot of free, young talent.
Instead, they claim DeShone Kizer (Mike Mayock more interested in stroking Notre Dame than making great personnel moves, I guess). Needing RB depth, they bypass Samaje Perine (did Jay not call him?) and then they get scooped on (Notre Dame alum) Josh Adams by the Jets. They do get Houston cast-off Damarea Crockett.
Is there a team worse from president to GM to head coach (who is a de facto GM) to their roster of talent than the Raiders?
With Cleveland and Buffalo turning around and Miami stocking top draft picks for the next two years, and if you’ve watched Hard Knocks and if you are familiar with Jon Gruden’s weak NFL win-loss record (and aberration Super Bowl run) and this whole Antonio Brown situation — you cannot answer anything but ‘Oakland’ as the worst.
— Speaking if Oakland as the worst...I don’t believe Derek Carr will last 2019 as the raiders QB. When the team crashes, they’ll deal him to a team in need midseason. Some QB will get hurt and Carr will be the draft pick trade answer. Gruden wants off Carr…has for two seasons now.
— How Houston did not insist on CJ Prosise (5-42-0) in their Clowney deal is more proof Bill O’Brien has no idea what he’s doing with running personnel.
The Duke Johnson deal with dumb enough (for what they paid). Missing Prosise is just not knowing what’s going on. Trading for Laremy Tunsil was smart…trading the future for him and not first signing Tunsil long-term is incredibly risky and could blow up in the Texans’ face. Tunsil has a ton of leverage now.
Prosise looks FANTASTIC this preseason. If he’s healthy and if Chris Carson falters — Rashaad Penny may not be the obvious handcuff answer.
— Seattle rookie ILB Ben Burr-Kirven (12 tackles) was going all out in this game. He looks great going forward but just not enough juice side-to-side/east-west in pursuit to be a big-time for IDP over time.
— Let’s end on kickers...
Two of my favorite ‘taking a kicker last pick’ plays are Jason Myers/SEA and Daniel Carlson/OAK.
Myers is proven for years and is 8-of-9 in FGs this preseason. Go look at Myers 2018 and ask why the Jets would let him walk. Answer = They’re the Jets.
Carlson is one of the best kicking prospects from college the last few years. He got Zimmer’d last year and Oakland benefited.
