2019 Free Agent Preview: Safety
I’ll say the same thing as I did last year…safety is the lowest priority position in the NFL. Lower than running back. Lower than punter. There are a ton of good safety prospects coming into the NFL for the past few years…and plenty of good college corners who move to safety as a better fit on top of that. And ageing/failed NFL corners moving to safety on top of that. You wonder why the Jets are the Jets…they took a safety with a top 10 pick and another the next round/pick just two years ago. Ridiculous.
It’s almost a waste going over the available free agent safeties because they’ll be low-balled and non-desired like last year’s top crop. However, just to check the box…
Best SAF in free agency: Adrian Amos, CHI – It will be a hit to the Bears when he leaves, but also a hit to the team that overpays him to join. He’s very good…just a misuse of money to sign, but he’s good.
Most overrated SAF/player in free agency: Landon Collins, NYG – so overrated. Cannot play the pass well at all. Had a lot of picks a couple years ago, mostly him being lucky…but perceived as him being great. Well, that’s been exposed…but he played at ‘Alabama’, so you can’t question it. Why is NYG letting him walk? Bad in coverage and overrated against the run, and a below average athlete.
Some sucker team will pay the price…maybe the Jets want more safeties. I’ll say Oakland and Cincy have a fight over him.
Best ‘sleeper’ SAF in free agency: Clayton Geathers, IND – Is great against the run, OK against the pass. Would be perceived better but nagging injuries have haunted him since college. A cheap one-year deal might be a sweet, cheap lottery ticket for the Bears…as Geathers has some ties to Chuck Pagano.
Best ‘deep sleeper’ SAF in free agency: Erik Harris, OAK – I saw some moments with him that really impressed. He’s an RFA, so likely back with the Raiders, but if not he could be a cheap steal at safety. 6’2”/226 with a 4.57 40-time and 6.96 three-cone with 23 bench reps.
Started off in the CFL and worked his way to the NFL.
Other SAF notes...
-- Tyrann Mathieu will go to Tampa Bay, reunited with Bruce Arians...so, there is no sense discussing it.
-- Eric Weddle just became a free agent/cut by the Ravens. He'll sign with a contender like Minnesota or New Orleans or New England, etc., on a cheap one-year deal.
-- I hope Earl Thomas joins the Cowboys so everyone in football would shut the heck up about it. I think there were more stories about Thomas-to-Dallas than anything else last season.
-- College Football Metrics is getting into high gear as the non-QB scouting reports begin and the deeper analysis for Dynasty Rookie Drafts unfurls.
