2019 Free Agent Preview: Wide Receiver

2019 Free Agent Preview: Wide Receiver

Incredibly weak free agent WR class in 2019. Considering the great WR rookie class, NFL teams should not waste any money here. If they can get a bargain, great…but otherwise, they should not waste cash in free agency. But, of course, you know they will...

Most talented Free Agent WR: Tyrell Williams, LAC – the bargain WR of the class, potentially. I know one thing…he’s not going back to LAC. A month+ ago, Williams was tracking as a bargain…suddenly, he’s becoming the apple in the eye for most looking for WR help in free agency.

A few weeks I noted: If the price is right, I wonder if Bill Belichick takes a shot that he can be their field stretching big WR. I hope he does. Steelers or Patriots are my prediction, with Seattle in the mix.

Now, this week, with Tyrell heating up in desire among the teams with a ton of salary cap space: It looks like the Colts are in the driver’s seat – they have the money, the need, and the coach who worked with him years ago. Guess what happens to T.Y. Hilton’s fantasy value if this happens? Takes some kind of dip. Guess what happens to Andrew Luck’s?

Most overrated Free Agent WR: John Brown, BAL – He just goes deep, and not all that well. Has a ‘hands’ issue on top of an injury history. The NFL has a million fast guys coming in from college that they can grab cheaper.

This has a Washington or Miami feel to it. Don’t rule out the Saints if the price is low enough. Lot's of ex-Cardinals going to Tampa in free agency but this is not one of them.

Best ‘Sleeper’ Free Agent WR: Cordarrelle Patterson, NE – Please, some team…make him a weapon with the bonus of having the best kick returner in the league. I could see him returning to the Pats or jumping away to get a shot at more WR playing time.

The Miami Dolphins may make this move…they need a whole new group of WRs, so the opportunity is there and all ex-Patriots’ people headlining the coaching staff would know him very well.

Best ‘Deep Sleeper’ Free Agent WR: Jordan Matthews, PHI – He might get that chance with the Pats…the chance he lost when they signed him last year and he got hurt in the summer. Possible he just takes a lesser deal to go back with his friends in Philly.

I would love to see him go to Kansas City, and when Watkins face-plants/get hurt again…JMatt slides in and rehabs his image with great output (in my dreams).

Other free agent WR notes…

-- I’m assuming Breshad Perriman returns to Cleveland or he’d be the best deep sleeper of 2019 if he’s ‘up for grabs’.

-- Chris Conley is a free agent…maybe heading to Seattle. Underrated what he brings to a team. Possibly a cheap Patriot play because Conley is sound as a receiver and as a blocker.

-- How fast things fall apart…I see Demaryius Thomas listed like #15+ among available WR rankings. Not long ago, he was the man, a top 20 fantasy thought for people like last summer. He may be finished. Once that big payday hits WRs…you never know what they will do/how hard they ‘want it’.

-- Who is paying Adam Humphries big? For what? What teams knows how to use the Welker-like WR besides the Pats? Name one. You can’t.

Don’t even get me started on Cole Beasley.

Just draft Hunter Renfrow and you’re good at a fraction of the price.

-- Chris Hogan should draw interest. He may be headed to the Jets if Robby Anderson is grabbed by another team (Anderson is an RFA with a 2nd-round tender). If not the Jets, then watch out for Tennessee. He doesn’t go to Miami, because the O-C was part of the offense that kinda stiffed him in 2018.

-- FYI, Dez Bryant is a free agent again! Yawn…
