2019 NFL Season MVP, ROY, COY, DPOY Awards ‘Tournament’ (NFC Finals)

2019 NFL Season MVP, ROY, COY, DPOY Awards ‘Tournament’ (NFC Finals)

To name our award winners in the four main categories (MVP, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year), we are going to go through an entire division to launch one candidate in each category to a final 8 tournament…battling head to head with candidates, advancing a winner each round until we have one man left standing.

We’re going division by division to find our final eight candidates and then we’ll play it from there to find a winner.

Today – the NFC Finals. *See our division-by-division nominees on the FFM home page.

MVP:

NFC East: QB Carson Wentz, PHI

NFC West: QB Russell Wilson, SEA

NFC North: QB Kirk Cousins, MIN

NFC South: RB Christian McCaffrey, CAR

WINNER = It has to be Christian McCaffrey for the sheer volume of the offense he was asked to carry…and how well he produced with everyone knowing he was getting the ball like every play. Not a lot of wins to show for it, but it was still a remarkable performance. All the QBs were really good, go look at the numbers for Wentz and Cousins, and you might be shocked. Wentz played well enough with the team physically dying around him. What Cousins did with the whole media/fandom attacking him after Week 3 was MVP-worthy. My order: McCaffrey-Cousins-Wentz-Wilson.

Rookie of the Year:

NFC East: WR Terry McLaurin, WAS

NFC West: QB Kyler Murray, ARI

NFC North: OL Garrett Bradberry, MIN

NFC South: OL Erik McCoy, NO

WINNER = I lean Kyler Murray here. Up and down numbers for the year, but some stunning performances mixed in…especially considering he was the most sacked QB in 2019. A mostly failed (to impress) offensive scheme, WR issues, no O-Line, an RB carousel and yet he was mostly unflappable all season and totally brilliant at times. McLaurin might have won had Keenum stayed healthy. The two OLs are really quality players. No losers here. My order: Kyler-McCoy-McLaurin-Bradberry.

Coach of the Year:

NFC East: HC Doug Pederson, PHI

NFC West: HC Kyle Shanahan, SF

NFC North: D-C Mike Pettine, GB

NFC South: HC Dan Quinn, ATL

WINNER = Before the season began, some people speculated that the 49ers would rise up from a poor 2018 to be a playoff team in 2019. It happened. NO ONE thought a 1-7 Falcons team, at the halfway mark, would go 6-2 to the finish…and go beat the Saints and 49ers on the road as part of the run – all that saving Quinn’s job.

How can we not see Quinn as having turned in the most remarkable turn within 2019 AND saving his job and that of his staff? Dan Quinn gets my vote here. Nothing taken away from Shanahan, who is the superior coach in general. My order: Quinn-Shanahan-Pettine-Pederson.

Defensive Player of the Year:

NFC East: CB Quinton Dunbar, WAS

NFC West: CB Richard Sherman, SF

NFC North: LB Za’Darius Smith, GB

NFC South: CB Marcus Lattimore, NO

WINNER = Statistically, and just watching, you could give it to Quinton Dunbar…PFF’s 2nd-highest rated cover corner for 2019 after Week 16 (for some context at how good his season was…not just me beating his drum for the past three years). The Redskins defense was horrific without Dunbar (he missed a few games) and they were mostly good/plausible when Dunbar was playing/healthy. Lattimore has the name/visibility, but Dunbar had the better season (and I think is the better corner). But Richard Sherman had great PFF cover numbers too and he was the defensive captain/true leader of the NFL’s best defense in 2020. Richard Sherman is my winner by a hair. My order: Sherman-Dunbar-Lattimore-Z.Smith.

Tomorrow we finish it all off with the finals of the AFC/NFC and announce our 2019 award winners.
