2020 Free Agency Positional Preview – Offensive Guards/Centers
Leading up to the beginning of free agency (3/18 at 4pmET), we’ll be looking position by position at the available free agent pool and discussing the state of the pool (for gems, sleepers, busts) and making some throwaway predictions on the landing spots of the top free agents.
Today, we look at: Offensive Guards/Centers
When it comes to the free agent guards and centers, there are a couple worth paying attention to…but most of them will likely be re-signed by their current teams. However, there is one guy to keep an eye on that could be in hot demand, changing teams, and be an impact upon arrival…
At Guard, the headliner is Washington’s Brandon Scherff…if he wants out of Washington, regardless, then he’d be a major free agent. Likely, the Redskins would just tag him if they needed to.
Andrus Peat, NO is a free agent…and I’m interested to see if the Saints let him walk, or they try to keep the band together for one last Brees-led run. They’ve had an up and down run with Peat for years.
The pivotal player, the surprise wildly in-demand OG will be the Patriots Joe Thuney. New England would like to keep him, but all the ex-Patriots teams are going to be coming after him like he’s a franchise guard, which he might be. The Patriots may sense it and tag him, but if they underestimate the market…a bidding war breaks out.
When it comes to Centers, Baltimore’s Matt Skura is the big prize, but no way the Ravens let him get out of their possession, I’d have to believe. Other than Skura, it’s a bunch of questionable, aging center options of any name value.
Let’s look at the Best, the Bust, the Sleeper and Deep Sleeper of the Guard/Center group…
BEST = OG Brandon Scherff, Washington…the Redskins cannot let him go. If Rivera can keep him and secure Trent Williams, the Redskins are a sleeping giant to win the NFC East in 2020…if they land some of the ex-Panther free agents this year plus land at least one great player from the draft. The NFC East is an open door if Washington can get it together…and not start Dwayne Haskins.
BUST = OC A.Q. Shipley, ARI…he’s definitely a ‘leader’ but his abilities may be more detrimental than his leadership helps the cause. The Cardinals need a great O-Line to spring Kyler, and Shipley could provide leadership…but also a hole in the middle Arizona cannot afford.
SLEEPER = OG Joe Thuney, NE…four-year starter since his rookie season. The Pats are going to have to pony up here or all Belichick’s exes are coming for him – Detroit, Miami, Houston, Tennessee, NYG.
DEEP SLEEPER = OC Graham Glasgow, DET…he may want out of Detroit, and the Ravens may look at him as a cheaper option over Matt Skura (Glasgow is out of Michigan, and thus the Harbaugh ties).
Not worth going through the top names, because if I had to bet…all the names I just mentioned…will all sign with or be capped by their current team.
If Joe Thuney hits free agency, he’ll wind up in Miami or NYG on a huge deal.
If Brandon Scherff hits free agency, he might wind up on the Bucs or Bills.
