2020 Free Agency Positional Preview – Wide Receivers

Leading up to the beginning of free agency (3/18 at 4pmET), we’ll be looking position by position at the available free agent pool and discussing the state of the pool (for gems, sleepers, busts) and making some throwaway predictions on the landing spots of the top free agents.

Today, we look at:

Assuming Amari Cooper is back with Dallas on whatever contractual way they do it…there’s not a lot of help at the WR position in free agency in 2020. A few sleepers and a couple ‘used to be’s’ but no real game changers/established stars in their prime aside from Amari.

Amari Cooper headlines the group.

You have A.J. Green and Emmanuel Sanders as the aging veterans past their prime but have some usefulness for another year…maybe.

Among the interesting names after that we have Robby Anderson and Breshad Perriman.

Let’s look at the Best, the Bust, the Sleeper and Deep Sleeper of the group…

BEST = Amari Cooper…but I’d be shocked if Dallas didn’t sign him. He’s only 26 years old…seems like he’s been in the league for a decade.

BUST = A.J. Green…not that he doesn’t have a year left in him, maybe even two…but he’s not ‘that’ A.J. Green anymore and his injury risk has been higher than his productivity the past few seasons. He’s played 9 games the past two seasons, none in 2019. He’s missed about half of the possible games his past four seasons due to injury. He’s soon to be 32 years old…he’s a sucker’s bet for some team to spend a lot of money on him.

Cincinnati is that likely, usual ‘sucker’.

SLEEPER = Robby Anderson…a sleeper and a bust. He’s much better than his Jets’ years portrayed…because their offense/QBs have been so awful. He’s a risk because once you pay him, you might turbocharge his off-field issues.

The real sleeper is Breshad Perriman – a helluva finish as the Bucs #1 WR down the stretch. He has fully turned his career around. He could be a major steal in WR free agency.

DEEP SLEEPER = I thought Phillip Dorsett was really coming into his own as a receiver the past two seasons…it’s just that Tom Brady is declining so fast, and only throws to Julian Edelman. Dorsett wasn’t the kind of style/option that fully fit Brady’s declining arm (see: Brandin Cooks dying off in NE). Dorsett will be a cheap add for a team and be a real find/solid asset to be a #3 starter/target, a decent #2 on the outside for a team in need of an experienced guy.

Amari Cooper = re-signs with Dallas.

A.J. Green = re-signs with Cincy and is another signal Joe Burrow needs to run away from Cincy. The Bengals will think this is a great signing and asset to lure Burrow…why would Burrow want to play on bad team with a broken down #1 WR, who he can’t grow with?

Emmanuel Sanders = Is going for the money wherever he can get the best deal. I think Las Vegas or Washington or maybe the Browns, if they ditch the LSU twins, might be willing to throw away money on a veteran presence.

Robby Anderson = Will Mike Mayock go to bat for his Temple connection, or will he know there’s trouble lurking? The Eagles have been trying to get Anderson the past two years. I’m giving the edge to the Eagles.

Breshad Perriman = He might get a surprisingly good, sizeable deal. If I were the Texans, I’d let Will Fuller go or trade him and replace him with Perriman. He could also be a fit for KC if Sammy Watkins is gone, and he probably will be. In the end, I think a team with a lot of money and desperation will pay up here – the Jets could put their money here and not with Robby Anderson. I’ll bet the Jets buy him with Houston possible.

Phillip Dorsett = goes to a team with Patriot connections…Tennessee or the Giants. I’ll bet NYG.

Nelson Agholor = A terrible WR, so a really piss poor organization lands him…the Chargers are my pick, but his connection to Frank Reich could get the Colts get suckered in here. You know an NFL team is going nowhere with its current management when you see the team that pays decent money for Agholor.

Randall Cobb = Might go back on a cheap deal for one more round with Aaron Rodgers
