2020 Offseason Moves ‘Tournament’ (NFC South)
This year, for judging the offseason, now that we are through the bulk of free agency (and pre-Draft), we’re going to rank the team’s offseason moves within their divisions #1 (best) through #4 (worst). One division each day.
The best team (in our judgement) moving on to the final four of their conference, where we’ll rank those winners until we get to the final two (the Super Bowl matchup of the offseason moves) and then crowning one ‘the best’ team of the offseason…and the same finding single ‘worst’ team of the offseason.
Looking at each team’s adds and losses together in one spot is often eye opening on just what certain teams really accomplished for the upcoming season. We’ll rank them and add some positive or mocking commentary all the way through...there are some teams that…that…I have no idea what they are doing.
And we’re looking at JUST the impact to 2020’s chase – 2021 draft picks or contract logic doesn’t matter. We’re just looking at a +/- player or talent impact to the 2020 cause.
Today we look at: the NFC South
1) CAROLINA PANTHERS
Key adds: Teddy Bridgewater, Russell Okung, Robby Anderson, Pick #148, Phillip Walker, Zach Kerr, Tahir Whitehead, Stephen Weatherly
Key losses: Cam Newton, Kyle Allen, Trai Turner, James Bradberry, Mario Addison, Gerald McCoy, Vernon Butler, Greg Olsen, Eric Reid, Dontari Poe
Net pos./neg./neutral: POSITIVE
Commentary: Wow, this is what happens when real coaches with real plans take over a dying team! Carolina gets better at QB with Teddy/P. Walker in and Cam/Allen out. Better on the O-Line with Okung in and Turner out (both good players but LT more important). They dumped all the defensive malcontents and full of hot air Greg Olsen and added a few sneaky solid defenders on great contracts, plus got a draft pick and waited for the market to cool on Robby Anderson and got a decent deal on him, from what was expected in the market.
I thought the Panthers were going to gut and tank 2020…they are actually building a decent foundation right now.
2) TAMPA BAY BUCS
Key adds: Tom Brady, Blaine Gabbert(?)
Key losses: Carl Nassib, Breshad Perriman, Peyton Barber
Net pos./neg./neutral: POSITIVE
Commentary: I’m still waiting for this mad dash of talent that wants to come play with Tom Brady. So far, it’s been crickets. But obviously they are way better off with Brady than Jameis. But they’ve otherwise lost ground with Nassib leaving and no one else arriving.
3) NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Key adds: Emmanuel Sanders, Malcolm Jenkins, Janoris Jenkins
Key losses: Teddy Bridgewater, Vonn Bell, A.J. Klein, Eli Apple
Net pos./neg./neutral: NEUTRAL
Commentary: Teddy wasn’t key to the Saints, so really it’s the three veteran adds vs. the younger guys they let walk…so they technically got better for 2020, but if Brees went down again…they might wish they had Teddy if Taysom can’t handle things. If Brees stays healthy this was an OK offseason. If Brees goes down…it could be looked at as not good future planning.
4) ATLANTA FALCONS
Key adds: Dante Fowler, Todd Gurley
Key losses: Austin Hooper, Desmond Trufant, Wes Schweitzer, Vic Beasley, Adrian Clayborn, De’Vondre Campbell, Devonta Freeman
Net pos./neg./neutral: NEGATIVE
Commentary: The Falcons lost several long-time, key members of the team and added two Rams troublemakers…not good.
-- Carolina moves on to the ‘winner’s bracket’ for us, not Tampa Bay…for best NFC South offseason (so far). Brady is a great get, but that’s all TB has done and they may have bought Brady at the exact wrong time. Tampa put a 43+ year old QB band aid on their issues…it might be good enough for the playoffs but not winning anything.
On the other hand, Carolina is smartly, swiftly redoing the entire foundation – they are building a real dynasty, the early days. Tampa might be good this year with the risk of Brady falling off quickly and they have no Plan B.
The Falcons move on to the ‘loser’s bracket’.
2020 Dynasty Offseason/Best Ball Reports and Rankings Are Constantly Adjusting To All The Changes!
It’s time for season #2 of our last season’s debut subscription…Dynasty Offseason/Best Ball.
I created Dynasty offseason as a way to communicate rankings/valuations on (500+) existing players (and also 400+ IDPs) for Dynasty and Keeper planning purposes (trades, etc.) as well as getting the jump on Best Ball/MFL drafts that begin in February and run all the rest of the year.
The fastest growing success percentage/money earning with FFM scouting/rankings/etc. is in those Best Ball/MFLs – draft a deep roster and forget it until the season begins, and then just watch the results…no lineup settings, no trading. Just pay to compete, out-draft everyone else, and try and cash in on our early/better read on things.
Dynasty Offseason subscriptions will be available when College Football Metrics begins (1/3/20), and you can purchase as a combo or just individually the one you want/need. However, the Dynasty Offseason rankings, etc., will not kickoff until right after the Super Bowl (articles and reports will post in January but player rankings/mock drafts not until past the Super Bowl)…and then we pile in material daily/weekly until opening day of the new NFL season.
If you were not a part of the Dynasty Offseason program last year, I will have more details on it on my playoff game recaps in 2020 and some additional explanation on Best Ball/MFL leagues, how to get started in them, how they work, etc. – if you’re not doing Best Ball/MFLs…you are missing out.
