Best 2020 NFL Wide Receiver Trio Preseason Tournament: AFC North Finals (Round 2): Ravens v. Steelers

Best 2020 NFL Wide Receiver Trio Preseason Tournament: AFC North Finals (Round 2): Ravens v. Steelers

You know what I hate? When I see stupid offseason content like ‘Best NFL Players Who Wore #10’ or ‘The Ten Best WR groups in the NFL’. Who cares what person I don’t even know thinks/writes about such things? It’s just clickbait.

I saw one of these ‘Best WR Group’ articles in my news feed the other day, and I rolled my eyes per usual. I caught the headline while I was strolling through my phone for a final check before bed. I put aside the phone. Pulled the covers over. Settled in. Started thinking about… Who would be the best WR  group in the NFL in preseason 2020, according to me? You know…there is so much WR talent flooding the NFL, every NFL team has a great duo…some trio…some go four-deep. How would I judge ‘The Best WR Group in the NFL’?

As I entertained myself with the notion, I thought – well, hell…I’ll take the (click)bait. I’ll do a report out on the best WR groups because now I’m wondering who it might be, for no particular reason.

But, how would I do it?

Here are my criteria…

-- Looking at/judging the three most talented WRs the team has/likely starters. Ranking those three guys #1-2-3 for their team according to the most talented, in my scouting eye/analytics for talent (not production numbers…because how can you account for rookies or their QB helping/hurting).

-- Pitting one team against another, the three WRs head-to-head against each other tournament style. When a team/trio wins their matchup and moves on to the next round to face another winner until we get down to the Super Bowl finals – best of the NFC v. best of the AFC.

-- It will be like a Royal Rumble, of sorts. Each team’s #1 ranked WR (according to be) will battle the other team’s #1 WR, and I will pick who I think is better. Then we do #2 v. #2 and #3 v. #3. Essentially a best of three, depth can overcome one great WR, winning team advances. Could a team get upset early rounds? Sure. But eventually, the strongest trios are going to survive and wind up in the end…you’d think.

Here’s how we’ll do it…

-- One matchup per day…so I can stretch the content out for the month of June. A little cheap snack of reading each day for June.

-- We’ll start within the divisions, seeding based on standings from last season. So, for example, in the AFC West, Kansas City will face the Chargers and Denver v. Las Vegas in the 1st-round.

2nd-round will be all the winners within a division facing off for best in their division.

-- We’ll get the eight divisional winners and seed them by AFC/NFC records from last season. And eventually go from this final eight, to final four, to the best AFC and NFC teams vying for the Super Bowl title of best WR trio in the NFL preseason 2020.

Got it? Good.

I’m going with gut for each winner – based on talent, based on age, based on injury-risk, based on if I ran an NFL team and you gave me the free choice of WR-a or WR-b to join my franchise, all things being equal…who would I take. You may disagree with my choice but that’s the point…to stir up cheap emotion over something meaningless but inherently ‘fun’.

AFC North Finals (Round 2): Ravens v. Steelers

BAL = Mq. Brown, Duvernay, Boykin

PIT = JuJu, Diontae, Washington

#1) Mq. Brown v. JuJu

WINNER = Marquise Brown (BAL leads 1-0)

It took me a bit to decide who to go with here. I’m not over the moon with either, but I think I get more playmaking skills with Brown…and his best ball may lie ahead if he’s fully recovered from his Lisfranc now. I’ll gamble on Brown versus overrated, but good, JuJu.

#2) Diontae v. Duvernay

WINNER = Diontae Johnson (1-1 tie)

My heart hurts here…two of my favorite WRs in the NFL. I have to go with Diontae by a step because I’ve seen what he can do on an NFL stage. I can only project DD right now. Tough loss for the Ravens, but I love Diontae.

#3) Boykin v. Washington

WINNER = James Washington (PIT wins 2-1)

It’s simple…James Washington catches passes and makes plays; you can rely on him. Boykin is a Combine freak, but I never know when he’s going to drop the ball (because it happens too much in key spots). I’ll take the steady, sneaky playmaker in Washington over Combine wonder Boykin.

Tomorrow: Jags v. Colts
