DROY after week 2 (By Chris Bilello from Bet The Close Podcast)

After two weeks of action the DROY market is starting to take shape. And it’s still seriously mispriced.

DraftKings has Patrick Surtain II as the favorite…and he’s co-favorite at Fanduel and BetMGM.

DK

Surtain +550

Parsons +600

Fanduel…

Surtain +400

Parsons +400

BetMGM…

Surtain +550

Parsons +550

I like Surtain as a player but these odds are insane.  Surtain wasn’t in the box score week 1 and only started week 2 because Ronald Darby is on IR. (The short term variety).  I’m not sure how Darby’s return to the lineup in a few weeks will impact Surtain but I imagine it can only hurt his playing time and opportunity to accumulate stats.  Unless I’m missing something, I think Surtain is here because of his pre-season pick 6 (a pick 6 of a pass throw by a QB who was waived after the pre-season).

There are actually a lot of rookies who are off to a great start this year…Patrick Surtain isn’t one of them.  If you want to bet a guy who’s Dad was a famous CB let me introduce you to Asante Samuel Jr (35-1, 33-1 and 40-1) who had 5 tackles in week 1 and an interception week 2.

Gregory Rousseau (20-1 at all three sportsbooks) had a quiet week 1 but in week 2 the Dolphins OL was having a party at the QB and everyone was invited…Rousseau came away with 2 sacks.

O. Oweh (20-1, 16-1, 18-1) of the Ravens had a couple of QB hits in week 1 and is single handedly responsible for his team beating KC by not only causing the CEH fumble but recovering it.

Jaycee Horn (12-1, 12-1, 14-1) had an INT in week 2.

Funny to look back at this draft and all of the hype associated with the offensive players. This defensive draft class that was considered relatively weak is making serious impacts all over the league.  I’m not sure an offensive rookie has impacted a single game yet.  (Except to help the other team win).

I tip my cap to the strong performers through week 2 and hold my stance on M. Parsons for DROY (still 6-1 at DK).  The price continues to be too generous.  Could this be the week that number finally disappears?  I think so.  As I’ve maintained all along, someone else can certainly win this award and stats are important but ultimately this is a popularity contest.  Parsons was the week 2 PFF Defensive Player of the Week and his sack (that wasn’t really a sack) pretty much won the game for the Cowboys.  Dallas hosts Philly on Monday Night Football in week 3…if Parsons can make some plays…the stage is set for them to be magnified!
