*Quick notes, moving fast on them...forgive any typos*
-- David Amerson signing with the Chiefs, suddenly KC has a defensive backfield with Amerson and the trade bringing in Kyle Fuller. If they find a stud linebacker to stop the run or if Ukeme Eligwe becomes that guy (probably too soon for that) – the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes at QB…this has the potential for a ‘wild and crazy’ team in 2018.
…one that Andy Reid will coach off a cliff, again…?
At minimum, the Chiefs are on the verge of a suddenly interesting DST…with Tyreek as the punt returner.
-- The smartest thing I’ve heard about the Vikings QB situation is franchise tagging Case Keenum…that sentence sounds insane if I went back into the future and read this to myself in August 2017.
If they sign Keenum to a real contract it would likely have $20M+ guaranteed. Why not make him prove it in a one-year $15M+ guarantee and see what happens…Keenum either succeeds or holds the fort while another QB is groomed.
I wouldn’t rule out Keenum on a one-year and Teddy Bridgewater finding no takers for him as a starter in the league and is signed to a rich 3-year deal for return to Minnesota, and they hope he becomes the starter or the fail-safe for when Keenum crumbles.
-- Day 2 of three previewing and ranking the NFL Combine WRs is in the books at College Football Metrics. All I’ll say is…THEIR #1 is not our #1 WR prospect…
The final 10 or so WR prospects will be preview scouted and ranked Sunday afternoon/night. We start the defensive position previews next week.
-- I thought this was mildly interesting…
Number of WRs in the top 10 for receiving yardage that were 6’0” or shorter by season….
2017 = 3 (3-yr. trailing avg. 3.3 per season)
2016 = 5 (3-yr. = 4.3)
2015 = 2 (3-yr. = 3.7)
2014 = 6 (3-yr. = 3.3)
2013 = 3 (3-yr. = 2.0)
2012 = 1 (3-yr. = 2.0)
2011 = 2 (3-yr. = 2.1)
2010 = 3 (3-yr. = 2.3)
2009 = 2 (3-yr. = 1.7)
2008 = 2
2007 = 1
-- Isn’t it amazing? There is already breathless anticipation of where newly created free agent A.J. McCarron might sign and what a great option he could be for a team in need. While the Super Bowl MVP gets “Maybe our team should throw Philly like a 4th-round pick for Nick Foles, but no more than that.”
-- Steelers DB Sean Davis rumored to move to free safety if/when they cut Mike Mitchell. I like Davis OK at strong safety but I think his best position is free safety. I also would think the Steelers would work him some at corner, but they seem locked in on him as a safety.
-- Day 2 of 3 for our WR prospect pre-Combine preview and mock draft. The WR group dealt us a much different mood compared to the RB and TE group. We’ll see what Day 2 brings all day today. We’re off on Saturday and then wrapping up WR Day 3 in the late afternoon Sunday into the evening. *Today’s grouping includes my first studies of supposed top guy Calvin Ridley.
I wonder why scouts and analysts like Ridley so? What could it be? Not sure? Speed, hands? It couldn't be just 'Alabama'? Nahhh...draft experts never jam all Alabama guys to the top of positional rankings pre-Combine because they don't know what they're doing so they rely on 'Alabama' to get them over? That never happens, so...
FYI, there is an Alabama guy ranked top 3 in four of 7 defensive categories/positions
We start looking at the defensive players Monday 2/19, but we’re also not done with the offense. We are planning a dynasty rookie mock draft of all the offensive players we’ve previewed this week – posting the mock draft next week…just to help with more proper valuations (for now) going into the Combine.
-- Voting still open for Robert Woods v. Brandin Cooks on the ‘Rewind’ Report voting. As of today, it looks like Mike Vrabel and Robert Woods will have reports done for next week as the winners of their categories, but there is still time for Cooks to catch up and pass Woods for the honor.
