*Quick notes, moving fast on them...forgive any typos*
-- The Saints offered one of my favorite WRs, Cameron Meredith, a $9.6M/2-year deal with $5.6 guaranteed. It’s a pretty nice deal.
The Bears have the right to match that and keep Meredith, or walkaway and get nothing in return.
The idiots that are the national football media are totally confused by this…and they assume the Bears will not match such a deal for this no-name, useless WR.
OF COURSE, the Bears are going to match that offer. Hell, they could sign him to that deal and then trade him to the Saints for a 6th round pick. But they aren’t doing that – they are not letting go of a #1 WR talent for chump change.
What this does mean – Cameron Meredith is testing well coming off his horrible-looking injury last year. He stays with the Bears, who now may have the most talented trio of WRs in the league. Not true for the football media because they don’t know who Meredith and Taylor Gabriel REALLY are.
A lot of options for Mitchell Trubisky (who the national pundits also dismiss)…so many options it’s going to be hard to figure them all out for fantasy. But for Trubisky…it’s aces.
I’ll be shocked if the Bears don’t match that offer.
-- The Browns traded QB Kevin Hogan to the Redskins…that’s a very good move by Washington. Hogan is no star but he’s a very capable backup. He should’ve been the full starter for the Browns last year, in part because all the other Hue Jackson prodigies were so horrible.
-- Guess what? You know how the Patriots are supposedly in the market for a QB in the NFL Draft? And that rumor forced the brilliant national football media to speculate that they’d trade up for a QB (which they would never do) like Baker Mayfield, etc.
Guess who the Pats had a private workout with? Mason Rudolph. Hmmmm. Why are the Patriots and I almost always on the same page lately? I guess it’s coincidence because -- I’m dumb…per the internet because I think Jordan Matthews is a good WR.
Have you heard Jordan Matthews can’t catch (since signing with the Pats)? I know this because every single football fan in chat rooms says it…so, it has to be true. Where are they all getting this information? Every single one of them know this? I know…they spend all their spare time tracking ‘drops’ on tape from the season prior, so I shouldn’t question them. I should’ve known the internet masses know what they’re talking about with Matthews. I’m dumb…me and Bill Belichick, just a couple of maroons.
Those of you seeing all this anti-Jordan Matthews rhetoric…enjoy. Take advantage for fantasy. Don’t fight it. Don’t try to defend it. Agree with it. Just nod your head and quietly take the wallet out of their back pocket unbeknownst to them.
-- Now that Jordan Matthews has signed up to play in the next Super Bowl against the Rams, it really thins out what’s left in free agency as far as impact players or any fantasy excitement. Some of the ‘names’ left on my tracking list (in no particular order)…
Mostly 30+ year old RBs and random WRs…or the (considered) top safeties in this class. When placing a final statistical valuation on the draft prospects…their talent grade + value of their position in the NFL)…we’ll have ‘safety’ as the lowest weighted value position to the NFL, dropping past ‘running back’, for the 2018 NFL Draft.
The only two names I see that could land and change a FF situation…Shane Vereen could hit in a spot to become the obvious 3rd down back and steal a few PPR targets from an established back. Like, let’s say he signed with the Rams. It wouldn’t be devastating but it would give Gurley a few extra relief snaps off.
I don’t know what another year will do for him, but for the life of me I cannot understand why teams aren’t pursuing Jamaal Charles at rock bottom prices…he looked very good in limited opportunities all last preseason and regular season. When I type that sort of thing…it’s a ‘bat signal’ to Bill Belichick, so get ready for that.
-- Items on the horizon for CFM and FFM…
On FFM: Putting the finishing touches on the next ‘Rewind’ report, planned to be out early next week.
On CFM: The draft analysts are conducting a Mock Draft taking rotating turns as the GM for each team. Making picks as if WE were the GMs and what we would do. It’s all fun and games until Josh Allen was selected and set off about 10,000 words of transcribed chat/debate between the analysts. You’ll see that Mock free view on CFM starting Sunday or Monday…four analysts, four picks at a time, released over 8 days four picks at a time.
On FFM: Frank Reich studies get underway…he’s my next coaching analysis.
All that and our normal stuff plus anything that comes up out of left field…
