Dynasty-Fantasy Football Notes (7/21/2019)

Throughout the preseason, we’ll be dropping Dynasty-Fantasy notes every few days as we have some things of interest, rumors, etc., to talk about.

*Writing them on the fly, forgive any errors…

Some news from Broncos camp (early start camp, prepping for HOF game on 8/1…yep…about 10 days away):

-- The two ‘winners’ I’m hearing about from Broncos camp, from a trusted observer…a training camp under new management/new head coach Vic Fangio:

OFFENSE: Courtland Sutton seems to be Joe Flacco’s ‘guy’ early on…over DaeSean Hamilton, and Emmanuel Sanders is not working yet, so we don’t know how that will change things (but I don’t think Sanders will be here anyway, he’ll be traded/released).

DEFENSE: Justin Simmons is the playmaker, standout on the new defense (so far). Simmons may make a run at ‘top scoring DB’, somewhat outta nowhere in IDP 2019…like Kevin Byard did a few years ago -- young guys who had a ‘pop’ season under new management.

-- Josey Jewell is getting every chance to lock in one of the two ILB jobs for the new Fangio defense. Jewell has shown promise and cause for concern since coming out of Iowa last year. This is a make or break moment. If he doesn’t shine/earn the job this year, his career, his upside is essentially null and void.

Early word on him is mixed, but he seems to be getting the real push for the starting job.

-- FYI… I’m told former UNC WR (2017 UDFA) Bug Howard is working some/mostly as a tight end with Denver this training camp.

It’s a mildly interesting deep-dynasty note – Howard was 6’4”/221 coming into the NFL and ran a 4.58 40-time with a 6.95 three-cone and a 37.5 vertical at the 2017 NFL Combine. 10”+ hands, 80”+ wingspan.

He’ll never make this roster (overloaded with TE prospects/contracts), but one to watch in the preseason to see if there is any spark for him at tight end that another team might chase after his release in September.

-- The truest words in football scouting/history… Vic Fangio saying about Drew Lock’s quarterback skills, “He’s a hard throwing pitcher that doesn’t know how to pitch yet.”

John Elway has to be furious with this statement because Fangio made the simple scouting case that everyone should have seen and thus dropped Lock to a 5th+ round prospect.

Name for me the ‘big arm’ quarterback with notorious/statistically bad accuracy who was coached up so well that they became an accurate/great NFL Quarterback in the last decade(s)?

QB prospects are who they are (talented or not), and if you think some magical coaching is going to happen to fix everything…then you haven’t watched any of the Hard Knocks or All or Nothing documentaries the past 5+ years and observed the ‘coaches’ in action.

There was a reason why Lock fell from the early/assumed #1 overall pick (because football observers are almost never right about their early scouting of draft prospects, but we keep listening to them anyway) to the #42 pick…and he might have fallen further/into the 3rd-round if John Elway, of recent Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch, Brock Osweiler, and Case Keenum fame, didn’t make his move.

Coming up on FFM/CFM…

-- By the end of next week, all teams will have reported to training camp…and my 2019 life is over as I know it, until January. It’s really football season! I’ll be reporting out notes from camps, etc., starting late next week and then we roll into scouting/reporting on all the preseason games – 8/1 THU night is the Denver v. Atlanta Hall of Fame game.

-- My Carolina Panthers/Amazon ‘All or Nothing’ reviews will start middle of the week – reviewing all episodes, as we do annually.

-- I ran another computer simulated season for fun, Faux 2.0, and those results will post daily over the next 10 days.

-- I’m nearly out of time for CFM scouting reports on 2019 prospects. I have 1-2 more I might get done by the end of July. In August, I will do like 2-3 more…and they will be dictated by lesser-name prospects catching my attention in preseason games.

Dynasty Rookie Draft ranking updates will change around the preseason schedule – more like (at least) two updates per week. One update after watching all the preseason games live as they are played in a week, and another a few days after that when I’ve had a chance to work through that week’s game tape/before the next round of preseason games start.

Obviously, we’ll be talking about all these rookie prospects during the preseason reporting on FFM as well as their rankings in our draft guide, best ball, and dynasty rankings.

-- Video shows, Q&A’s, etc., coming up this preseason – for Draft Guide subscribers, to ask (re)draft (or trade/keeper/anything) questions during the preseason. Schedules will be announced soon. As well as more mock draft sessions from me using different formats.
