Dynasty-Fantasy Football Offseason Notes, Rumors, Musings (5/16/2019)

Throughout May and into the summer, we’ll be dropping Dynasty-Fantasy notes every day or two as we have some things of interest, rumors, etc., to talk about.

*Writing them on the fly, forgive any errors…

-- The big news from the past few days…the Jets abruptly fire their GM Mike Mcccagnan, and installed Adam Gase as HC/GM. Just when you thought the Jets could not be run any worse…they find another layer.

First, Mike Mcccagnan should’ve never been hired in the first place…and then should have never made it employed this far. If he wasn’t bad enough at his job…installing Adam Gase as acting GM is even worse. You probably agree the Jets GM was a nightmare. You might think Gase ‘wasn’t so bad’ in Miami. You’re wrong.

His claim to fame is making the playoffs his first year at Miami – going 10-6 and earning a wild card spot. That season he beat Buffalo twice, the Jets twice, Hue Jackson’s Browns (in OT), Chip Kelly’s 2-14 San Francisco disaster, Jeff Fisher’s Rams, and a very bad (5-11) Chargers team. Miami would grab 8 of their 10 wins from awful teams who would organically own draft picks #1, #2, #5, #6 (beat twice), #7, #10 (beat twice). They would play 4 games with playoff teams that season…going 1-3, and then getting drop kicked by the Steelers in the first-round of the playoffs.

Since separating from Peyton Manning, Adam Gase-led offenses ranked (in points scored) #23 (CHI O-C), #17-28-26 (MIA HC). His defensive rankings were even worse than the offensive ones during his stint in Miami.

Heading into his third (and final) season with Miami, Gase took full control and built the team in his image. His illustrious backfield was the Gore-Drake combo. His WR group was expensive Albert Wilson-Amendola-Stills. He drafted TE bust Mike Gesicki. He never addressed an heir apparent to Ryan Tannehill, over three seasons, no matter how many ACLs he blew out.

Adam Gase is a Hue Jackson-esque time bomb. He already fought with (and won) the power struggle with Mike Mcccagnan. He is now fighting with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams (who hates Gase’s consultant Joe Vitt…the guy who turned on Williams in bounty-gate in New Orleans). Gase is a cancer to wins/organizational health and Gregg Williams is a double-cancer. Here’s Williams’s last stints as D-C…as the D-C for Jeff Fisher’s Rams (ran them into the ground) and the Cleveland Browns (goes without saying).

The Jets situation has gone from disastrous to abhorrent…because ownership may be the worst in the league. There’s nothing like when wealthy team owners ‘promote’ their silver spoon son’s/relatives to run a gigantic, complex, high-profile business…it always works swimmingly. See also: Oakland Raiders

The Jets ‘under’ 7.5 wins this season is a sweet bet to make.

I can’t wait until Sam Darnold officially blows up in their face. First, they’ll give Adam Gase two years to ‘fix’ Darnold, then year three they’ll blame Gase for not having fixed him, and then they’ll hire a new head coach to try to fix what the previous two coaches were blamed for (see: the Jameis Winston story)…then they’ll start to realize Darnold was the issue all along. The Jets are locked in for the next five years of bottom-feeding with Darnold…because they won’t admit/correct what GM Steve Keim did in Arizona after one year of his 2018 head coach/QB combo.

Rabid Jets’ fans…spare me your Darnold-defending emails. Actually, recycle your Geno Smith emails you sent me when I told you that was a sure fire bust out of the gates and into the future. If you’re going to question my validity with ‘who are you, anyway?’ I’ll present to the court…you’re a Jets’ fan on purpose/of your own freewill – I rest my case.

-- In other news, the Chargers signed Geno Smith this week. Unbelievable.

-- In other ‘you can never question NFL scouts and coaches because they know more than us commoners’ news…

Former top QB pick in his draft E.J. Manuel announced his retirement. Another great football decision by the NFL powers-that-be.

Also, Bruce Arians is about to toss #11 overall pick CB Vernon Hargreaves onto the streets. He should’ve never been picked that highly, not even close. He’s been a mess in the NFL since day one.

I don’t mention this to laugh at/dance on the graves of NFL personnel departments. I do it as a reminder – just because a team picks a player highly and EVERYONE in the football community is on-board with the thing that they don’t understand but agree with the herd on to sound smart/be safe…it doesn’t mean they are right/smart with the pick. It’s logical/appropriate to critique/take the opposite position against their 100% lockstep agreeing with each other on scouting/football things.

-- Coming up on FFM/CFM…

I’m wrapping up my ‘Faux’ 1.0 (computer simulated season) series of articles. Several twists and turns for the 2019 season…the schedule is kind to some, and devastating for others. You’ll see that series all next week along with Xavier Cromartie’s ‘Faux’ simulated season as well, and then he and I will publish a chat about our simulations division by division and name our always free money best ‘over/under’ win total bets we’ve started making for 2019.

I’m hard at work on the 2019 Draft Guide research/analysis and writing the commentary. Projected launch date will be mid-June.

2019 Dynasty Rookie Draft Rankings, and 2019 Dynasty + Best Ball rankings update planned before Friday midday – to get ready for the upcoming busy weekend of drafting.
