Dynasty-Fantasy Football Offseason Notes, Rumors, Musings (6/14/2019)

Throughout June and through the preseason, we’ll be dropping Dynasty-Fantasy notes every day or two as we have some things of interest, rumors, etc., to talk about.

*Writing them on the fly, forgive any errors…

-- You’ve seen the Marques Valdez-Scantling notes about him looking good in OTAs, etc., and being the #2/a starting WR over Geronimo Allison. I am hearing plenty of pro-Marquez Valdez-Scantling words as well, but the extra item to consider, not really being reported, I think because the mainstream football media is into Valdez-Scantling (for sheep reasons), which means they ignore everything else – Jake Kumerow is really capturing everyone’s attention, again, in the preseason. The new staff is blown away by Kumerow…and they’re probably surprised too because all anyone talks about, among the young GB WRs, is Valdez-Scantling.

Aaron Rodgers likes Valdez-Scantling, but he really likes Geronimo Allison…and he adores Jake Kumerow. Whether that moves the coaching staff to start one over another remains to be seen…and they’re all different types of WRs, so it’s not that simple ranking one ahead of the other.

Also ignored by the mainstream football media…Equanimeous St. Brown, who adds a different element to the WR group and is showing a big jump in year two. FYI, he’s been working on some jet sweep work too.

-- I admire the Patriots’ operations so much… I’m reading Mike Lombardi’s book on his experiences in the NFL, and he’s close friends with Bill Belichick and obviously worked closely with him…so, I’m getting to see more insight on how the pats/Belichick operates (and how dumb other teams are from Lombardi’s perspective).

Many times, the Pats just sit back and wait for 31 other teams to make mistakes; to pay full retail price on everything and then they come in and buy that asset at their self-forced liquidation sale.

Yesterday, the Pats basically got Lions TE prospect Michael Roberts for free. Roberts was a 4th-round draft pick TE prospect in 2017…coming off a senior season with 16 TD catches, which is amazing for a college tight end…especially one who is a traditional, Antonio Gates (but slower) type tight end, not a WR masquerading as a TE.

Roberts is talented. Roberts barely played last year, because Matt Patricia knows how to make tight ends…with his Hakeem Valles fetish and wasting Luke Willson…but despite that, Roberts scored 3 TDs last season. For context how crappy the Lions passing game was last year…those 3 TDs led all Lions’ TEs in TD catches, in fact it was more TDs than all the other tight end TDs on the Lions combined (1). Additionally, Roberts’s 3 TDs was tied for 3rd-most on the team…tied with Golden Tate.

Roberts scored his first TD of 2018 in Week 2, then was nicked up and missed the next three games, returned Week 6 and scored 2 TDs against the Dolphins. He was on his way, looking better than all the other Lions’ TEs, but then a critical dropped TD in a game that might’ve cost them a win and he kinda faded off the scene. He caught 4 of his first 4 targets in 2018, then just 5 catches on his final 16 targets.

The ‘tight end master’ from 2018, Matt Patricia, wasted some salary cap to add Jesse James and then set a high draft pick on fire grabbing the media’s fake-Gronk, highly overrated T.J. Hockenson. You don’t think Hockenson is overrated – go watch him blocking and receiving vs. Mississippi State in his final game/bowl game. You have been sold a bill of goods – an OK/good TE prospect made out to be ‘great’. You’ll see.

With all the class in the world, Patricia announced yesterday’s trade with the words, “We’re moving on from Michael.” As if he were some radioactive waste. As if they gave him some huge chance that he blew. At least feign some praise for the kid and wish him well; even if you don’t mean it.

I’m not saying Roberts is a guaranteed star waiting to happen, but I am saying he was a pretty intriguing three-down TE prospect who started to show some receiving chops last year. He clocked a 4.8+ 40-time at his NFL Combine, but did so at 270+ pounds (not overweight just ‘big’). As he’s leaned up, he’s gotten quicker. He could be a thick tight end at 255-pounds, improving as a blocker, running in the 4.6s with terrific/gigantic 11.5” hands…all under the development of Bill Belichick. A prospect he got for nothing, essentially…because Matt Patricia had to have Jesse James and T.J. Hockenson instead. I’d take Roberts, as an NFL GM, in development for the upside and sheer cost between those three TE names. Belichick just did the same.

-- Speaking of tight ends, if you can explain why Minnesota drafted Irv Smith highly, and then tried to trade Kyle Rudolph, only to find no takers, but took that as a sign they now wanted him and needed to give him an expensive contract extension…I’m all ears.

-- Bonus ‘insider’ daily notes coming this weekend for DOBB subscribers. We’ll be discussing the two backup RBs starting to make their move on the coach’s hearts to overtake the thought-to-be-starter. An interesting statistic you must know about Kyler Murray…how people ‘feel’ about him. Jalen Ramsey and Tyreek Hill notes planned…as well as anything else I get my hands on before publishing.

-- Coming up on FFM, CFM, and DOBB…

*Putting the finishing touches on the release of the 2019 Draft Guide this weekend, version 1.0. We will be opening things up sometime next week, likely mid-week. More info on the release Monday 6/17/19.

*We continue our look at the 2020 Devy prospects next week on the IDP side of the ball. Some of the (supposed) top DBs, LBs, DLs.

The QBs, RBs, WRs, TEs preview scouting has been posted. The offensive Devy’s will also be included in our next CFM 2019 Dynasty Rookie Rankings (350+ prospects) for early ideas on the 2020 valuations compared to the current 2019 class.

*The next 2019 Dynasty Rookie Draft Rankings update will be today/Friday June 14th in prep for weekend drafts.

*Ditto, the next Dynasty top 550 players rankings and Best Ball rankings updates will be today/Friday as well.

*Once we’re done the first round of 2020 Devy previews, we’ll switch back to more ‘Quick Hit’ scouting reports on the 2019 rookies on CFM. The next wave of guys I’m planning are ‘the freaks’…lesser-known/discussed prospects who broke the gauges with amazing three-cone, 40-times, vertical, bench press, etc., at Pro Days/the Combine.

*Working on an upcoming series looking at the most likely players cut for salary cap reasons or traded, from each team, and the fantasy ripple effects that could happen.

*The final installment of Xavier and RC discussing the divisions for 2019 will post soon, and then our discussion of our profitable Top Three Over-Under Win Total best for summer 20
