I’m sure Taysom Hill Will NOT Start Week 1 (at QB)…Now

I’m sure Taysom Hill Will NOT Start Week 1 (at QB)…Now

What a disaster…

Jameis Winston was named starting QB for Week 1 after his lucky event MNF game where Marquez Callaway made stupendous catches on cable television to make Jameis look good. I thought to myself this week: Certainly, Sean Payton will see that MNF game for what it was…and that he wasn’t going to change Taysom out, the guy who has been running first among the two QBs in just about every drill and practice…including the practices right after the big MNF game.

Sean Payton deserves what’s about to happen with his already fledgling team. A tough early schedule stacked with top offenses and/or top defenses to face the first five weeks (GB-CAR-NE-NYG-WSH)…and the Saints just don’t have the horses anymore to keep up, and Winston is a liability not an asset…always has been, always will be.

Had Taysom been named starter for Week 1, considering the fallen state of the Saints roster (due to injuries and cap squeezes among other issues) – the media would have howled 24/7 that Winston should be the starter…whipping the fans into pitchfork and torch status…until Payton finally relented and benched Taysom for Winston. Taysom starting Week 1 would have no room for error. Now, Winston gets to take the hit…and we’ll see how long Payton is willing to stick with him.

I’m not saying Taysom Hill is the next great NFL QB…he’s just better than Winston, and way more interesting for FF-purposes.

Winston is going to be eaten alive by the early schedule…given the schedule and the fact that he’s a massive turnover problem, and that other QBs can deemed ‘winners’ – Jameis has been a ‘loser’ in the NFL (career record as a starter: 28-42-0…a 40.0% win-rate in the NFL). I don’t think Winston will survive after Week 3…but definitely not after Week 5 going into the bye Week 6. Taysom would then take over, but it would be a lost cause Saints season by then…but Taysom would be there to try and rack up some FF numbers.

Now, Taysom probably plays his usual TE role and is a TE1.5-2.0 for a stretch, getting in on red zone work at QB and TE and H-back. Then, he’ll be the starting QB a few weeks in – I’d bet on Jameis failing miserably, which has always been the safe bet…and he has the worst surrounding weapons he’s ever had to work with on top of that.

In redraft, I don’t see any reason to count on or wait on Taysom now…as a QB. He has some TE depth appeal in non-PPR (if he gets listed as a TE now). Deeper roster leagues, you can hold to see if he provides some TE help/depth – hopes of a shock TE1 blip for short stretches running and throwing…and catching things, and then he gets flipped into QB against some point.

This is going to be bad news for the Saints in win-loss terms. I now project the Saints to finish last in the NFC South with this final hit – Winston at QB and Callaway-Smith-Vannett/Johnson/Trautman as the main downfield passing game to go-with…it’s not good.

We’ll discuss more all this week, but Taysom is not a super-strong hold for redraft now…not a great last-round flyer anymore. He’s something for deeper roster leagues, especially non-PPR (with him as a TE option, hopefully) or 4pts per pass TD leagues as a #3 QB you just wait to see when he takes over, if you think you need to.

I was sure Taysom was going to start Week 1 all calendar year…and even up to right before Winston was announced, and I think Taysom was all set to do just that until that MNF game happened. The circumstances changed…we have to change with it for Fantasy. Now, we just wait for the Jameis implosion to come – the schedule and surrounding weapons are not his friend.

This Winston news is also good news for a certain DST-duo theory we are proposing. Check that report to see why.
