Week 5 TNF -- H-Chat: PHI at CAR (-3.0)

*This is the transcript of our Handicapping group wager chat for this particular game. Taking it as it is, so forgive any typos, etc. It's just casual opinions shared. Also, we may veer way off topic but that's half the fun of it.

Katz: Two teams that I refuse to buy are actually good. Someone has to win on Thursday night, though.

Rabbitt: I really don't know how to look at this game. I almost feel like just flipping a coin.  I think my opinion is going to be waiting for someone smarter to speak, then stealing their thoughts.

Katz: I like that approach as well. I have no feeling on this game at all. I can't tell if Carson Wentz is legit. I can't tell if Cam Newton is back to being Cam Newton. This game is just filled with players I think are overrated and running games that don't work.

Savage: Very suspicious that this is -3.5 instead of -3. The same thing happened with the Panthers last week - the line crept down to 2.5, just begging you to take Detroit.

RC: I’m ringing this up at -3.1 for Carolina, pretty evenly matched but give the home edge to Carolina.

If you respect Buffalo, Carolina beat them…and the last two weeks gritty wins on the road vs. two playoff level teams in NE-DET.

The Eagles have beaten NYG-LAC-ARI the last three weeks…three of the worst teams in football. Two of them narrow escapes.

Skolman:  The two favorites that jumped off the page to me Sunday night were Den -10 and Car -3.  Den was 10.5 by Monday morning and now -12.  This quickly went to 3.5.  I think the Panthers are a lot better than the Eagles.  They likely got bet up to 3.5 because of Cam (and that's a good reason) but I think this may be a sneaky top 10 defense (Peppers said this is the best defensive talent he's ever played with).  Panthers could be the NFC South winner and maybe one of the top seeds.  I'm still anti-Wentz but he does look better this year...even if he doesn't pay off his bets.  Happy to be on the other side of him in a big game.  And even though it's not until next Monday night the Eagles have Washington next.

Now I'm seeing -3 (-125)...need Philadelphia's finest to keep driving that down!

Katz: Skolman may be the persuasive voice I needed to jump on the home favorites. We haven't seen a home favorite on Thursday since opening night and it didn't go so well. I've had enough of these road favorites. Carolina is home. They have the better defense. If Cam cares, they have the better QB. I'm in. It's Carolina for me.

RC: Lane Johnson out puts this over the top for me.

I just re-watched CAR-DET today…if that Cam Newton plays THU, they’ll win by 10+. Wow.

Rabbitt: I went from hating this game to thinking about real money on Carolina.  Thanks team!

Savage: The Eagles on the road, short week, finally playing a good team, down a right tackle... I'm going to roll with the team and pick Carolina as well. I've been hesitant to endorse them as a good team ever since they got blown out at home by the Saints because I didn't think very highly of the Saints. The more data we get though, it seems possible that the Saints are actually a pretty good team that had a tough early schedule. From that perspective, the Panthers have played 1 bad game vs a desperate 0-2 team when Cam wasn't able to practice all week.
